"2019 Global English Education China Assembly " opened on the morning of July 26 at Hangzhou International Expo Center. The theme of the conference was contained in the following slogans:: "English Education in China: A New Era, A Shared Vision”. Nearly 3,000 English education experts from colleges and universities at home and abroad, as well as English teachers from primary and secondary schools, gathered in Hangzhou to write a new chapter in the modernization of English education in China and to embark on a new journey of English education exchanges between China and foreign countries, cultural exchanges between different civilizations.

Xu Ming, standing committee member and secretary general of Hangzhou municipal committee, Chen Guomei, vice mayor of Hangzhou municipal people's government, Li Xingwen, inspector of the publicity bureau of the CPC central committee, and some guests, and Christopher Bowers, executive director of the TESOL International Association board, Rod Ellis, a professor at Curtin University in Australia, Peter Skehan, honorary research fellow at the University of London, Gong Yafu, chairman of foreign language teaching committee of China education association, and some well-known English education experts at home and abroad attended the opening ceremony.

Zhang Zexi, a member of the standing committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and vice chairman of the Zhejiang Provincial committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference said in his speech: “As socialism with Chinese characteristics enters a new era to realize the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, this goal provides new opportunities for English education in China. The English education sector should further expand foreign exchanges and cooperation and accelerate the modernization of English education. Zhejiang Province will continue to deepen the reform of foreign language talent training mode, and actively serve the comprehensive training of talents, the development of Zhejiang Province and the realization of national strategy. We will build a new pattern of all-round openness, advance international people-to-people and cultural exchanges and cooperation, and promote inter-civilization exchanges and mutual learning.

The TESOL International Association chairman (2019-2020), Deborah J. Short said in her speech: “The TESOL International Association and China Daily have worked together over the past three years to improve the level of English education in China; we are delighted to have this opportunity to be one of the sponsors of the international conference on English education in China. As interest in learning English grows, the TESOL International Association will continue to help English educators and learners achieve their goals. We look forward to the teachers attending the conference learning more new ideas of 21st century English teaching, so that they can bring the knowledge back to their hometown and apply it to their own classes in the future.

This conference was co-sponsored by China Daily, Hangzhou municipal government, Shanghai International studies university, foreign language teaching committee of China education Association and TESOL International Association, 21st century English education media and the publicity department of Hangzhou municipal party committee. The school of foreign languages and literature of Beijing Normal University serves as the academic guidance unit.
